Background
As Europe’s largest seaport, Rotterdam is a major logistics and economic hub and home to a large number of international businesses. The Dutch city also attracts an increasing number of tourists every year.
Rotterdam Partners is responsible for promoting the Dutch city and ensuring that these tourists get the experience they hoped for. They run three tourist information offices where visitors are shown their way around and can buy souvenirs.
Challenge
Tourists often pay with cash and there are many small items sold in the shops, like €1 city maps. At its tourist office in the central train station, Rotterdam Partners takes 70% of its turnover in cash. This is particularly high as it is typical for tourists to try and get rid of their cash as they begin their journey home. The company has considered not accepting €100 and €200 notes anymore, but for a tourist it's normal to have these dominations in their wallet.
Solution
When modernising its sites, Rotterdam Partners seized the opportunity to reassess all their systems and implement improvements. Finance Manager, Jannie Pietersma, saw a cash management solution for the front office during her holiday in Germany.
“It occurred to me that this solution was safer, reduced the risk of cash differences and lessened work on the administrative side. I told myself I had to go home and look into these payment solutions."
With the new layout of the tourist information offices, the traditional checkout counters were replaced by units integrated into the store. However, they did not want to give people the impression that a cash drawer could just be opened there. Rotterdam Partners chose Gunnebo’s SafePay as an upgrade to its method of cash handling at its branches at Schielandhuis and in the central hall of the Central Station.
Now that these sites use the same system, personnel can seamlessly work at either office and the figures of both locations can easily be compared.
"One advantage of Gunnebo's SafePay is that the authenticity of banknotes is checked, which relieves our staff of a considerable burden."
And in the tourist sector, where a lot of cash payments are made using larger denominations, SafePay not only offers better store security but also improves the administrative process.
